It is well known to all of us that agriculture is the backbone of our country. Out of the total population 85% is engaged in agricultural activities but with inadequate production. Because of such low production capacity our farmers are vulnerable to famine and drought and as a result have become dependent on food aid.
In recent years government has spent substantial amount of foreign currency for importation of wheat to fill the gap. Ethiopia has fertile agricultural land, large number of rivers and underground water that can be used for irrigation, with favorable climate that suits agriculture. While such condition exists cyclical phenomenon of food shortages happens in Ethiopia. This reminds all of us to raise a question and look for solutions to fulfill ethical and professional responsibilities.
Countries like USA and Canada out of their total population not more than 2-3% are farmers who produce surplus that supports world wide food aid. In Ethiopia, small holder farmers cultivate fragmented land, use backward technology and low level irrigation that exposed farmers for low level production. The country has more than 3 million hectares of land that can be developed for irrigated agriculture; however it is not more than 10% that actually has been utilized. Even such level of irrigation is not targeted to improve productivity and thus its contribution to the agriculture sector is low.
Like wise the livestock sector has not contributed much despite having huge livestock population. The overall situation has not been able to meet the required supply for the increasing human population. For example according to World Health Organization the recommended per capita milk is 200 litres while in Ethiopia the consumption per capita is only 17 litres. Like wise shortage of meat, eggs and other livestock products coupled with soaring price indicates that quite a lot of work is to be done.
The driving force for organizers to initiate Hiber agro Industry is the above mentioned problems and the existence of suitable natural resources to support agriculture. We the organizers believe that given the situation and having commitment to work restlessly it is possible that change will come in a short period of time. Having the experienced agricultural experts, the extension technology, and the required physical and financial capital the organizers hope that the required target will be achieved. Simultaneously through strengthening the processing capacity additional foreign exchange will be earned.
In general our objective is not only to do agricultural production; but also fill the gap of processing of agricultural produce to improve the quality of produce and also get/achieve high level profit for our shareholders. According to our plan we are determined to empower each shareholder by enabling him return his capital and earn more than 85% profit in three years time.
